A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
