Hurricane Melissa is predicted to escalate to a infrequent highest-level cyclone as it veers towards Jamaica, causing deadly sudden floods and landslides.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by early next week, based on data from weather experts.

Alerts of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as Melissa generates up to 76cm of rainfall and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Take cover without delay," locals have been told.

This hurricane is the 13th named cyclone in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Cyclone Threat

A highest-level cyclone is the strongest type, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is set to diminish in strength to a category four cyclone before making landfall on Jamaica, experts said there was "minimal real distinction in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it strikes the country.

With tropical storm-level winds and rain predicted to begin ahead of it moves across central Jamaica - including potentially the capital, Kingston - warnings indicate that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of damaging winds and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and many mudslides," advised meteorological officials.

The nation's leader the official said: "I know that there are countless citizens who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: you should be concerned.

"But the best way to handle nervousness and any apprehension and concern is to stay ready."

Locals are being told to fortify their houses with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Wider Effects

Warnings are also active for regions of Haiti including the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides currently triggered by the storm have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Projected Course

This weather system is forecast to move across Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it arrives at Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level hurricane.
