‘Online Monitoring’: Unilever Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
First identified over 150 years ago within a Pennsylvania drilling site, the simple jar of Vaseline might not appear as an natural focus for digital platform algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a popular subject on TikTok has placed it at the forefront of an marketing transformation, in which large companies are allocating substantial funds to content creators and devoting less capital to advertising goods in traditional media.
From Oil Rigs to Online Hacks
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers applying to their skin with a derivative of drilling. Today, a spree of user-generated videos have chronicled its broad application in “everyday tips”.
It has been touted as a remedy for cleaning shoes or prolonging the scent of perfume, and also a remedy for squeaky doors. Users have even applied it to combat the nuisance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Noticing its viral resurgence, executives at the multinational boosted the tips by asking their own scientists to test them and sharing the findings with influencers.
Assertions that it diminished the burn from hot food on the lips were given the thumbs up. So too were ideas it could extend fragrance and rejuvenate purses. Proposals that it might brighten smiles or lengthen eyelashes were disproven.
The ‘Social Listening’ Strategy
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have formed the bulk of its promotional efforts. Yet this viral episode has helped convince executives to turbocharge spending on content creators.
This observation of social channels to inform business strategy has been termed “social listening”. The company's chief executive, freshly instated, has stated the intention is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on digital creator content.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
A leading Unilever executive, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was simply adapting to new ways of engaging audiences. She said engaging on social media “without dampening the fun” was crucial.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, back to when people were hanging out their laundry and discussing household products.
“We are witnessing a departure from a mass communication approach, where we would just broadcast out … Currently, it's countless discussions, various groups. The shift of the algorithms means that these groups seem specialized, yet they are vast.
“If you can make sure your brand is shared by consumers, recommended by peers, that is how you can build trust and relevance. Influencers are vital for this. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
This plan mirrors dramatic transformations occurring in how media is consumed, with Gen Z and millennial audiences spending more time on social media platforms than television, magazines or radio.
This change is evidenced by drops in broadcast and newspaper ads. Across Britain, commercial funding for major broadcasters have dropped substantially in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
The Rise of the Creator Economy
This further signifies a merging of functions as large companies almost become production houses themselves, partnering with a multitude of digital creators to promote their goods.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Obviously there’s a flow of audiences from conventional channels and they’re spending a lot more time on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are viewing scheduled television or reading physical magazines.
“Numerous corporations inform us audiences believe endorsements from the creators they engage with over traditional advertisements. This is a persistent pattern.”
He added firms may also cut expenditures by targeting content creators over big traditional media campaigns, which also allows them to tweak their content more easily to see what works.
Such methods are increasing. Promotional expenditure on digital creator partnerships is increasing four times faster than total media spending. Stateside, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is expected to hit multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Regardless of the massive shift, industry figures said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as TV channels continued to possess the influence to drive countrywide discourse.
She added: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … There is undoubtedly a future for traditional media.”
