The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
